The way I work and what you may expect

Although most people experience difficulties, painful events and loss at various stages of their lives, when it is you that is struggling to cope with a particular crisis or crossroads it can feel like you are alone with your stress, pain, fear, loss and doubts. Even if some well meaning friends or family are there for you, often they can be too close to you or the issue to be of any great help. Talking to a professional counsellor very often brings great relief.

The sessions will be confidential and focused on you and your needs. You can expect to be listened to without being judged, shown respect and empathy. The sessions last for 50 minutes. The amount of sessions will be negotiated in the beginning and reviewed during the work to meet your needs.

Counselling is about a safe place for you to explore and express your issues, concerns and fears, whether these are past or present. Frequently it is about discovering, accepting and loving who you are on the inside as well as the outside. Counselling can often assist in the journey of self discovery, and so, my job as a professional counsellor, is to enable you to recognise what it is you need in order to grow and reach your full potential.

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate" (Carl Jung)

Counselling is not about magical cures or answers. There are no guarantees and it does require a certain level of commitment and willingness to work. It is not about being told what to do. If you require this kind of advice, then counselling is unlikely to meet your needs.

Very often life changes and transitions like: moving home, changing jobs, stress, sexuality, coming-out, the beginning or ending of relationships, starting a family, mid-life crisis, bereavement or retirement can be very depressing, stressful and worrying. Counselling may help you to work through these developmental stages in your life and grow towards a more satisfying future.

Counselling often helps you gain a better understanding of your past and present conflicts, to recognise, appreciate and use your own resources and consider possibilities for dealing with difficult situations. This may involve clarifying choices and opportunities for bringing about change; or alternatively may help you come to terms with those aspects of your life that you are unable or do not wish to change.

Counselling is about working together in an honest, non-judgemental and supportive relationship at a pace that you decide.

I work with:

  • Anger management
  • Anxiety
  • Assertiveness
  • Inner-child work
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Abuse
  • Trauma
  • Relationships
  • Bereavement
  • Loss
  • Sexuality
  • Gay/lesbian/bisexual issues
  • Work/career
  • Couples
  • Young peoples issues
  • Mid-life crisis
  • Pregnancy/post natal
  • Lack of direction
  • Low self esteem
  • Health & Terminal Illness

My approach is humanistic and integrative and I work very relationally. That means our work is largely built around our relationship and interactions. I frequently draw from many models and aim to tailor these to best meet your needs. I aim to help you feel valued unconditionally, and assist you in understanding the effects past experiences of conditioned worth may have had on your self esteem, behaviour and character.

I see it, that although we are complex beings, we only tend to develop difficulties, illness or destructive habits e.g. such as anxiety, addictions or depression, when our innate human needs were not met in the past and are not met now through our current situation or lifestyle. I work with helping you identify which needs are not being met sufficiently and find ways to address these.

I frequently use creative ways of working with you e.g. art, imagery, visualisations, two chair work, metaphor and relaxation techniques. Each individual is just that, individually unique and no matter what label(s) you have been given previously, I am interested in you as a human being.

Testimonials

"Feeling down was something that I had become used to, via the counselling sessions I had with Sue I learned to address this. I realised just how long I had been feeling this way and also that it didn't have to be like that. I learned to accept myself and build up my confidence week by week. The counselling really helped me deal with issues I had been carrying around a while ,move on and become a happier person for it."
Thanks again,

Stephen
